Two splits and a sweep was the result in the weekend after Thanksgiving in the North American Hockey League’s South Division as we approach the half-way point of the regular season. Losing streaks were ended, some continued and this weekend saw a hat trick for the second week in a row!

The New Mexico Ice Wolves and the Corpus Christi IceRays skated to a split on Friday and Saturday at the America Bank Center in Corpus Christi. On Friday, the Ice Wolves benefited from two goals by Taylor Ewing to force overtime but fell in the shootout thanks to IceRays forward Justin Thompson who secured two points and a 4-3 shootout win for the Rays. On Saturday, though New Mexico got their revenge, opening up the scoring in the third period to put what was a 3-2 game out of reach for Corpus Christi. New Mexico picked up just their second road victory with a 6-2 victory over Corpus Christi.

The Topeka Pilots ended their five-game winless streak in dramatic fashion with a road sweep against the Odessa Jackalopes. Austin McCarthy scored a hat-trick on Friday night en route to an 8-2 victory. Topeka, who came into Friday’s game with the worst power play in the NAHL, rattled off four unanswered power-play goals in the third period. Saturday the Pilots completed with road sweep with a 3-1 victory. Odessa’s losing streak now extends to six games.

In another edition of the Battle of the Cattle, the Amarillo Bulls fought the Lone Star Brahmas to a split in North Richland Hills. Amarillo took a close 2-1 game on Friday thanks to outstanding goaltending by Max Gutjahr who made 25 saves on the night. On Saturday, the Brahmas got their revenge wining 4-2 on Saturday.

Finally, the Shreveport Mudbugs were idle this week.
