This morning the Prince George Cougars have chosen to relieve Head Coach Richard Matvichuk of his duties. The Cougars have been on an eleven game losing streak before the announcement. Current General Manager Mark Lamb will take over as Head Coach on an interim basis while Development Coach Nick Drazenovic will serve as an assistant coach.
"Something needed to change." Those were the words of Cougars General Manager Mark Lamb regarding the dismissal of Matvichuk. He was asked about the choice to dismiss Matvichuk now instead of at the end of the season. "It's all timing. You can't put yourself in that situation to let a lot of things fester. You have an obligation to the organization so there is a lot of factors that go into that, to just ride it out knowing there was a chance he wasn't going to be back next year is kind of sluffing everything off and I don't think that is fair for anybody."
According to an interview he did on the matter he said that he will be interim coach and everything else is under evaluation. He also added that the frustration was starting to mount on the entire front office and the players the longer the losing skid went on. He also added that it was difficult to relieve Matvichuk because of their professional relationship going back to their time with the Dallas Stars.
The total record of the Cougars under Matvichuk was 85-89-22. In his first season behind the bench the Cougars won the BC Division only to be eliminated in round one by the Portland Winterhawks. Last season the Cougars record was 24-38-10. Their current record is 16-30-4-2. The Cougars last win was January 12th when they defeated the Kelowna Rockets 4-2.
