65 USHL PLAYERS MAKE THE NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING PRELIMINARY LIST Junior Hockey News

Today, the National Hockey League released the NHL Central Scouting Preliminary List. The list identifies which players it currently has on its radar as the season commences. The list provides a starting point for the players that will be taken into consideration for the 2019 NHL Draft in Vancouver.

The list is organized into a three level rating system. Likely first round candidates are ranked with an “A”, second and third round candidates are ranked with a “B” and later round candidates are
ranked at “C”.

This year’s list includes an impressive 65 players connected to the USHL. No other junior league in the world had as many players make the list. 52 of the USHL’s 65 players are either playing or committed to a college program, presently. (See the: USHL PLAYERS - NHL CENTRAL SCOUTING PRELIMINARY PLAYERS TO WATCH LIST, below.)

The list is indicative of what we can expect from the USHL in the future. Many of the top Junior leagues in Canada and around the world play with NHL drafted players. With such a sizable number of prospects on the Preliminary List, it is reasonable to conclude that the number of drafted players with ties to the USHL will grow significantly. In turn, this should result in a higher caliber of play from the USHL for years to come.

For the players, this list is simply the beginning. The goal is to be at or near the top of this list when play concludes in the spring. Chicago Steel’s Robert Mastrosimone is one such example. The rankings from NHL Central Scouting listed him as a “B” skater, projecting him as a possible second or third round selection for the 2019 NHL Draft. When asked about Mastrosimone’s potential with relation to making the list, Chicago Steel’s General Manager Ryan Hardy said, “Robert is a competitive, skilled forward who is only scratching the surface of what he can become as a player. Being named to NHL Central Scouting’s preliminary list is nice recognition, but Robert has far loftier goals which he is working towards every day. Our staff feels privileged to work with him and confident that Steel fans will see a few more names from this year’s team garner 2019 NHL Draft attention as the season progresses.”

With the objective now clearly identified and a plethora of highly skilled players looking to reach the big show, the 2018-2019 USHL is sure to continue its exciting start delivering more intense play, increased focus and unbounded determination.
