CALGARY, Alta. – The Canadian Junior Hockey League announced Wednesday that Alex Newhook of the Victoria Grizzlies (BCHL) has been named the recipient of the its Top Rookie Award for the 2017-18 season.

Newhook, a 17-year-old St. John’s, NL product, garnered the accolades for Top Rookie, which goes annually to its top first-year Jr. ‘A’ player within the 132-team CJHL, through voting completed by each of its 10-member leagues from across the country.

He earned the accolades over fellow CJHL Top Rookie award finalists Zachary Okabe, Grande Prairie Storm (AJHL); Jack Quinn, Kanata Lasers (CCHL); Jacob Wasserman, Humboldt Broncos (SJHL) and Keighan Gerrie, Thunder Bay North Stars (SIJHL).

In his first year in the Jr. A ranks, Newhook led all BCHL rookies in points this season with 66 in 45 games on 22 tallies and 44 assists.

His efforts also saw him finish eighth overall in BCHL offensive production in 2017-18.

The five-foot-11-inch, 185-pound forward’s campaign included a 10-game point streak from Dec. 6 through Jan. 9where he amassed 26 points, including a trio of four-point efforts.

Among his other accomplishments saw him pick-up BCHL player of the week honours in the second week of the season as he put up six assists in two wins at the league’s Bauer Showcase in Chilliwack, B.C.

He scored 10 points in his team’s final five games to help Victoria claim the Island Division title.

In November, Newhook had four points in five games while playing for Team Canada Black at the 2017 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Dawson Creek and Fort St. John, B.C.

Newhook earlier committed to Boston College (Hockey East) where he will attend school on NCAA Div. I scholarship for the 2019-20 season and skate for the Eagles men’s hockey program.
