Estero, FL – Trevor Bednarek scored twice to help the Florida Jr. Blades defeat the Hampton Roads Whalers 4-1 Monday afternoon at the Chilled Ponds Ice Sports Complex. The win against the host team at the Hampton Roads Whalers Southern Showcase sealed the Jr. Blades first place division standings with a 10-0 undefeated record.
“We're very happy with the boys and the determination they showed over the weekend. We had a tough schedule going in as each team we played was very strong,” said head coach Todd Pococke. “The boys knew what they had to do to get the wins and they did it. To come away with four wins on the road is tough and shows our team has heart.”
Bednarek would open the scoring with an even strength tally at the 4:36 mark. Within 45 seconds, Hampton would respond to tie the game. The Jr. Blades would reclaim the lead when Bednarek notched his second goal of the battle ending the frame 2-1.
Within nine minutes of the final period, Riley Degler would earn an even strength tally to widen the gap. Hampton would attempt a rally by pulling the goaltender for an extra attacker in the final minutes but Shea Mitruska would sail the puck to captain Evan Maxey for an empty net goal insuring the Jr. Blades 4-1 win.
Fabio Meier earns the win stopping 36 out of 37 shots faced, while Everett Yasinski takes the loss allowing three goals on 39 shots with the addition of one empty netter.
"We're proud of the effort displayed over the weekend. We knew heading in that each game was going to be a battle, the guys responded well,” said assistant coach Tyler Carlston. “All four opponents were quality competitors and we are excited to come away with wins in each contest."
