YOUNGSTOWN, OH – The Youngstown Phantoms have promoted long-time assistant coach Brad Patterson to be the new head coach of the team effective immediately. Coach Patterson has been with the organization since the 2009-10 season and replaces John Wroblewski as the Phantoms bench boss.
“I’m grateful for this opportunity and thank the Loney family, the Zoldan family and Jason Koehler for supporting me throughout my time with the Youngstown Phantoms,” said Patterson.  “I’ve been privileged to work with outstanding head coaches over the years including Curt Carr (Merrick College), Anthony Noreen (Orlando Solar Bears), and John (USNTDP).  During my time with each of them I gained valuable experience and appreciation for various coaching styles, but more importantly was always treated as an equal.”
Patterson’s hockey knowledge stems from growing up in a hockey family in Cranbrook, British Columbia to playing four years at Michigan Tech followed by seven years with several professional teams in the United States and Europe including the Youngstown SteelHounds from 2006-2008.  Following his playing career Patterson started as the assistant coach with the Phantoms in 2009.
During his tenure with the team, he’s seen 13 players drafted, signed, or play in the NHL, more than 90 players commit to play NCAA Division 1 hockey, went to the Clark Cup Playoffs three times, and was part of the 2014-15 Anderson Cup Champion team that also broke the United States Hockey League (USHL) record for most consecutive wins.
“I’m looking forward to expanding the hockey culture we’ve created and focus on developing hardworking, honest, detailed, and energetic players; all qualities that represent our Valley.  This precedent will start at our tryout camp this week and will continue to be ingrained in our players throughout the season,” said Patterson.
“I’ve been fortunate to have worked with Brad during the past six seasons and know that current and incoming players will not only learn from Brad, but will also enjoy playing the game under his mentorship.  Brad has an exceptional hockey mind and handle on the league and level of players the USHL attracts,” said General Manager Jason Koehler.
"Aafke and are thrilled Brad has accepted the head coaching position.  Brad is familiar with the players, the USHL as a league, the Youngstown area, and the Phantoms organization.  He possesses the interpersonal and coaching skills necessary for us to have continued success in the community and in the league,” said Co-Owner Troy Loney.
“We have had the pleasure of working with Brad over the past several years with the youth hockey programs at the Ice Zone and with the Youngstown Phantoms team.  Brad has developed into a strong manager in whom we have the utmost confidence,” said Co-Owner Bruce Zoldan.  “Brad has demonstrated his commitment both to the hockey program and the greater Youngstown community.  We are most fortunate to have him as an integral part of the hockey family in Youngstown.”
Coach Patterson resides in Boardman, OH with his wife, Holly, and their one-year-old son, Tucker.
