YOUNGSTOWN, OH- The Youngstown Phantoms fell to the Madison Capitols by a final score of 5-3 Saturday night in Wisconsin. It was the third lossin three days for Youngstown.
Madison defenseman Ryan Carlson, playing in his first ever USHL game, opened the scoring when his shot from the point found its way through traffic and past Phantoms netminder Colin DeAugustine.
The Capitols would double their advantage just over three minutes later, when Alexandre Payusov tallied his 15th of the year with a wrist shot from the left circle.
Youngstown would respond minutes later, when Matt Miler’s slap shot blew past Ryan Edquist. It was Miller’s seventh goal of the campaign, assisted by Tommy Apap and James Winkler.
The Phantoms would go on the power play shortly after Miller’s tally with a chance to tie the contest. However, after a neutral zone turnover, Marshall Moise broke free on a breakaway and scored a shorthanded goal for Madison.
Yushiroh Hirano would score his first of two goals on the night halfway through the second period to once again make it a one goal game. Hirano’s goal was the only tally of the second frame, and Madison would take a 3-2 lead into the second intermission.
Just seconds into the final period, the Capitols would extend their lead back to two behind Luke McElhenie’s 13th goal of the year. Then less than two minutes later Madison would add another, when Charlie Parker jammed home a rebound for his third goal this season.
Hirano would bury his second of the game and 20th of the campaign in the final minute.
Youngstown also had a defenseman playing in his first ever USHL game, New Jersey native Andrew Petrillo.
“The level of play is definitely another notch up. Everyone is faster, they play harder, and they’re bigger. It was a lot of fun for me to get out there and get used to the game, and I hope to be a big part of this team next year,” said Petrillo.
The Phantoms will play another three games in three days set on the road next weekend, traveling to Michigan to take on the Muskegon Lumberjacks and Team USA.
