MWJHL Players of the Week - Junior Hockey News

The Midwest Junior Hockey League, a proud member of the Amateur Athletic Union, announced today its players of the week for the period ending Sunday, Jan. 20.

 

The players of the week are voted on by league staff, coaches and general managers.

 

 

Player of the Week - Joe Clemente, Bloomington Jr. Blaze

 

Clemente had a monster weekend, recording 14 points in Bloomington's three-game sweep at home over the Holland River Bandits.

 

Friday night, Clemente tallied a goal and two assists and the following night, went for two goals and three assists. On Sunday, the 19-year-old from ElmhurstIll., scored three goals and added three assists.

 

Overall, Clemente has 23 goals and 33 assists for 56 points in 31 games, good for third in MWJHL scoring behind Nick Murphy of the Soo Firehawks (70 points) and teammate Matt Donley's 57 points.

Defenseman of the Week - Scott Luca, Hartland Hounds

 

After going his first seven games of the season without a point, the 18-year-old native of KalkaskaMich., broke out with three goals and three assists in the Hounds' 11-4 win over the Michigan Ice Dogs last Friday night.

 

Luca, signed by Hartland back on Dec. 15, tallied all six of his points against the Ice Dogs at even-strength.

Goaltender of the Week - Gavin Carlson, Bloomington Jr. Blaze

 

A 20-year-old native of PalatineIll., Carlson picked up all three wins in Bloomington's weekend sweep at home against the Holland River Bandits.

 

Last weekend, Carlson stopped a total of 69 shots over the three games. On Friday, he made 33 saves in a 4-2 win and then turned aside 35 shots in an 8-5 win the following afternoon. Sunday, Carlson relieved starter Will Rohleder and stopped all 10 shots he faced over the final 13:59 to get the win.

 

Carlson, who also earned Goaltender of the Week honors last week, is 8-1-2 this season with a 3.53 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage.
