Trio of one-sided wins highlight NOJHL play Saturday - Junior Hockey News

SUDBURY - A trio of games in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Saturday saw each contest conclude in one-sided results.

SOO THUNDERBIRDS 6 NORTH BAY TRAPPERS 1 - The hometown Thunderbirds moved back into sole possession of first place in the NOJHL standings with the convincing victory over the Trappers.

Beau Orser actually staked North Bay to the early lead giving his side the edge after one period of play.

It was all Sault Ste. Marie in the middle session however as they struck for four goals to take control.

Finding the back of the net for the T-Birds were Adam Ritchie, Anthony Miller, Jeremy Solomon and Yan Kalashnikov.

They then put it away in the final frame courtesy of Ritchie's second of the night and a solo effort by Gavin Burbach.

Joel Horodziejczyk turned aside 30 shots to pick up the win helping the Thunderbirds improve to 22-5-3-3, two points ahead of second place North Bay who fell to 21-6-3-3.

Greg Dodds faced 35 attempts in a losing cause for the Trappers.

BLIND RIVER BEAVERS 7 ELLIOT LAKE BOBCATS 2 - Skating on home ice Blind River got two tallies from Cray Roberge and three assists off the stick of Travis jones to lead them to the triumph over visiting Elliot Lake.

The Bobcats' Dustin Cordeiro opened the scoring on the power play five minutes into the contest only to see the Beavers connect three times before the opening stanza was out.

Netting those goals were Corey McEwen, Adam Newkirk and Roberge with the final two coming with the man advantage.

They then tacked on three more in the middle session with Tyson MacLeod, Samuel Wilbur and Roberge doing the damage.

A Jesse Berthiaume power play effort made it 7-1 before Elliot's Lake's Steve Gaul rounded out the scoring.

Brock Crossthwaite turned aside 30 of 32 attempts he faced to record the win as Blind River raised their record to 9-20-2-4 while moving into a tie for fifth in the league standings with Abitibi.

Bobcats' starter Cory Simic suffered the loss allowing six goals on 22 shots with Thomas Graham stopped 19 of 20 in 34 minutes of relief as Elliot Lake fell to 8-22-01 in defeat.

KIRKLAND LAKE GOLD MINERS 5 ABITIBI ESKIMOS 1 - The Gold Miners got a pair of goals to help them complete a sweep of a weekend home-and-home of the Eskimos with the road victory.

The two sides appeared to be headed to a scoreless opening frame only to see Jordan Briand connect late to put Kirkland Lake on top after one period.

They extended their cushion to 3-1 after 40 minutes on markers by Jean-Francois Sylveste and Joey Ftoma that were sandwiched around a Ryan Wildman effort midway through the stanza.

Bishop then found the back of the net twice in the third to wrap up the night's scoring.

Chris Komma picked up the win in net for the Miners making 27 saves as his side improved to 18-15-2-1.

Jeremy Laux saw 27 pucks in a losing cause for Abitibi who dipped to 11-18-0-2.

NOJHL action resumes on two fronts Sunday.

Game one of the day features North Bay visiting Blind River at 2 p.m. while Sault Ste. Marie hosts Elliot Lake at 7 p.m.
