MWJHL announces weekly player awards - Junior Hockey News

The Midwest Junior Hockey League, a proud member of the Amateur Athletic Union, announced today its players of the week for the period ending Sunday, Jan. 6.

 

The players of the week are voted on by league staff, coaches and general managers.

 

 

Player of the Week - Matt Donley, Bloomington Jr. Blaze

 

The 20-year-old native of Mt. PleasantMich., posted nine points in two wins last weekend on home ice against the NWO Grrrowl.

 

Donley, also Bloomington's scoring leader, tallied a goal and two assists in Thursday's 8-4 win and then exploded for three goals and three assists in Friday afternoon's 7-3 victory.

 

Overall, Donley has 12 goals and 29 assists for 41 points over 25 games for the Jr. Blaze and in four of his last five games, he has recorded multi-point performances.

 

Also Receiving Votes - Joe Clemente, Bloomington Jr. Blaze; Denis Danilov, Rhinelander Street Cats; Anthony Laaksonen, Soo Firehawks; Cam Miglia, Hartland Hounds; Steven Smoltz, Bloomington Jr. Blaze

 

 

Defenseman of the Week - Kevin Killips, Soo Firehawks

 

Killips, who on Monday was named December's MWJHL Defenseman of the Month, continued his stellar play with 10 points in the Firehawks' three-game sweep at home over the Rhinelander Street Cats.

 

Friday, the 19-year-old Sault Ste. MarieMich., product registered six points on three goals and three assists. Saturday night, Killips added a goal before finishing the weekend with a goal and two assists on Sunday.

 

For the season, Killips leads all MWJHL defensemen with 17 goals and 44 points in 30 games. He is also fourth overall in league scoring.

Goaltender of the Week - Keegan McGraw, Soo Firehawks

 

McGraw earned the wins Saturday night and Sunday afternoon as the Soo completed the sweep of the Street Cats.

 

In Saturday night's 7-1 win, McGraw stopped 20 of 21 shots and then Sunday, the 19-year-old PontiacMich., native made 33 saves in the Firehawks' 10-4 victory.

 

McGraw is 8-3-1 this season with a .893 save percentage and a 3.47 goals-against average.
