Sault Ste. Marie, MI - Saturday afternoon saw a wild game that saw a lot of goal and even more momentum swings. Kalamazoo led for the majority of the game, but failed to lead when it mattered most, and fell to Soo by the score of 6-5. Brandon Adams, of the Soo Eagles, and Robbie Payne, of the Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings, both recorded hat tricks.
Kalamazoo's leading scorer, Payne, wasted little time in this game, as he gave his team the 1-0 lead at the 8:06 mark in the first. Payne was able to get the puck and center ice and drive right to the front of the net, deke a defender, and score for Kalamazoo.
The Eagles went into the first intermission on the losing side, but things would not stay that way for long. Alexander Taulien (11th) was able to put the Eagles on the board just 2:20 into the second period with an unassisted goal.
Less than two minutes after Taulien's goal, Michael Crowley (4th) added to the Soo total and put his team up 2-1. Crowley's goal was assisted by Denver Pierce and Mike Sabatini.
Just as momentum was starting to slip away from the Jr. K-Wings, their second leading scorer, Luc Boby, responded with authority. Boby's goal, his 14th, tied the game up and came just 17 seconds after Soo had taken the lead.
Kalamazoo, however, was not satisfied with just tying the contest, as they would take the lead at the 5:07 mark with Payne striking again. This goal was his 19th of the season and his second of the game.
Following the onslaught of Jr. K-Wing goals, the Eagles removed goalie Zach Nagelvoort and replaced him Tyler Marble. There was a new goalie, but there was a similar result as Patrick Spellacy (7th) was able to extend the Jr. K-Wing lead to 4-2.
Just 3:30 before the second intermission, Adams was able to cut into the Kalamazoo lead with his 5th goal of the season. The teams went to the locker rooms with Soo trailing Kalamazoo 4-3.
It seemed unlikely that the third period would match the excitement of the second, but it was somehow able to exceed it. Starting just 2:23 into the period, the Eagles were able tie the game up with Adams' (6th) second goal of the night.
With just 6:29 to go, Soo seemingly put the final nail in the Kalamazoo coffin. Eric Rivard (18th) was able to put the puck past Kalamazoo goalie Marcus Due-Boje.
However, the Jr. K-Wings refused to quit and tied the game at 5 at the 16:01 mark. This game tying goal was scored by Payne. This goal was not only his 20th of the year, but gave him a hat trick for the night.
Unfortunately for Kalamazoo, there were two hat tricks in this game. Adams (7th) recorded his hat trick at 17:36 by attacking the net and taking advantage of the puck by Rivard. This gave Soo the 6-5 lead, and this would prove to be the final score.
With this win, Soo extended their lead over Kalamazoo in the North Division to 10 points.
