The Big 8 on October 8 - Junior Hockey News

Town-to-town, team-to-team, let's take a quick trip through the North Division of the North American Hockey League.

Teams are listed in current order of standing with win-loss-overtime loss record in brackets.

PORT HURON (9-3-0)

Offensive balance and outstanding goaltending have combined to put the Fighting Falcons in first place. Kody Polin leads Port Huron with four goals while six others have netted three apiece. Max Milosek has been a plumber between the pipes with an 8-1-0 record, 2.06 goals against average and .935 save percentage.

KALAMAZOO (7-3-0)

The Jr. K-Wings can bury the biscuit as evidenced by the 42 goals they have gunned. Luc Boby has lit the lamp eight times and Robbie Payne is right behind with seven despite having missed two games.

JAMESTOWN (6-2-2)

The feel-good story of the early going after winning only 19 of 60 games in 2011-12, the Ironmen added freewheeling defenceman Dylan Zink in a recent trade. Zink has three goals and two assists in four games for the Ironmen since being obtained from the Central Division's Brookings Blizzard for forward Jeff McFarland. Lucky Luc Gerdes has six goals in 10 games for the Ironmen, who have been getting good goaltending from the dependable duo of Minnesotans Reid Mimmack and Tim Shaughnessy.

SOO (5-4-2)

After an 0-3-1 start to their first NAHL season, the Eagles have since gone 5-1-1, including a home-ice sweep of Jamestown and a weekend trip to Port Huron in which the Soo took three of four points. Goalie Tyler Marble has been a masked marvel with a 5-1-1 record, 2.26 GAA and .940 save percentage. Linemates Eric Rivard and Jared VanWormer have combined for 27 points in 11 games.

JOHNSTOWN (4-3-3)

The Tomahawks have finally climbed over the .500 mark while still looking for their first win away from Cambria County War Memorial Arena.

JANESVILLE (4-4-2)

The Jets need to start putting some shots on goal. In losing a pair of road games at Johnstown on the weekend, the Jets managed just 28 shots in total.

MICHIGAN (2-7-0)

Scoring goals has been a problem for the Warriors, who have tallied just 17 times in nine games. Goalie Michael Pesendorfer, who began the season as the Warriors third-stringer, has been a bright spot with a 2-3-0 record, 2.98 GAA and .910 save percentage. The Warriors, who have played only one game at home this season, are at Perani Arena in Flint for three this weekend as Jamestown comes to town for a pair and Johnstown for one.

SPRINGFIELD (1-7-2)

The Jr. Blues lost a pair of one-goal games at Jamestown on the weekend that could have easily gone their way. Goalie Matt Leon has been getting it done in goal with a whopping 197 saves in six starts.

The Soo Eagles need to use their better players, especailly in the shoot out, #9 #19 #18.
#14 for the Soo is NOT the answer.

Hurd, let me re-state. I believe the better veterans should take part. Not a 95 rookie who I believe needs another year of midget major.

Jim: well the 1995 rookie you reffer to (Sabatini) is rated by the NHL for the 2013 Draft so I dont think he needs another year of midget major as you believe...

Hurd, I read that. I have been watching the Soo team via fasthockey, and I don't see anything of that nature out of #14. maybe I'm missing something? I'm retired and live in TC and miss the Junior team here and I'm just following the vets that now play for the Soo. I just don't see the skill level from him versus the vets. Just my 2 cents.

Jim is absolutely correct a 95 no matter how good should be playing midget major. Just because you have been scouted by who ever all be it the NHL you know damn well that does not mean you have a ticket to the show and most likely if he was to go to a top midget major program or academy (sydney crosby shattuck st. marys) he may develop just as well if not possibly better with a midget major program over a jr. team. Those players (95,96) should be left to develop one more year before making the jump and give them the opportunity to come into Jrs more prepared.

Jeff,

For the record, Sidney Crosby played major junior in Canada as a 16-year old with Rimouski of the Quebec Hockey League. Just about every major junior team in Canada has as many as four 16-years olds on its roster every year.

Jeff...thus continues the debate over tne overlap of Midjet Minor and Major with 15 to 18 yr old Juniors...with some districts almost no Midjet and thousands of screaming fans going to HS games (ie Minn)....there are different individual, regional, and even $ situations...along with Canada Major Junior and Tier II Junior A, the NAHL and most Tier III teams have chosen several and the USHL is heavy on "young ones"...the U16 and U18 proponents will always say this weakens AAA...I say let there be all...if 15 or 16 year olds are ready, want to and can play at a level with 19 and 20 year olds, and they want them, let them

Ooops...on my above reply...thinking birth years, i should be saying "if birth years 96' and 95'...blah blah blah...with birth years 93' and 92'".....so lets see, that makes a 95' 16 or 17 during this season, or something like that

The Jr. Blues lost two heartbreaking games over the weekend. 18 seconds was the difference between the Jr. Blues and Jamestown as the Jr. Blues surrendered goals both nights in the final 20 seconds of the games. The Jr. Blues return home this weekend to face the first place Port Huron Fighting Falcons

Jr. Blues lose in Shootout

Jamestown scores 2 goals in final 3:30 minutes

The Jr. Blues got off to a good start Friday night in Jamestown, NY. The Jr. Blues took a 1-0 lead into the locker room after the first period despite being outshot 9-3. Tommy Cooney was able to capitalize on a power play late in the first period period. Cooney picked up the puck at the red line and made a nice move to beat a defender. He crossed the blue line and took a shot through a screen that beat the Jamestown goalie low to the stick side.

10 minutes into the second period, Brett Skibba (pictured above) scored a pretty goal on a fantastic individual effort beating the defensemen wide. 3 minutes later, Mitch Rogge would score his first goal of the season in his first game returning from injury. Skibba threw the puck at the goalie's feet and the rebound landed on Rogge's stick who put the puck in the back of the net. James McGing finished the night with 2 assists and Jack Sloan also added an assist. Despite building a 3-goal lead the Ironmen would add a goal of their own with under 4 minutes remaining in the second.

The Jr. Blues would hold a 3-1 lead until 3:10 left in the third period when Ironman defensemen Dylan Zink found the back of the net from the point. With 6 seconds left in the game the Ironmen had a faceoff in the Jr. Blues zone. The draw was won by the Ironmen and again Dylan Zink scored with 3 seconds on the clock. The teams would play to a scoreless overtime. The Ironmen would eventually win the shootout 3-2 and take 2 points.
Late 3rd Period Goal beats Jr. Blues

Jr. Blues fall on last minute goal

Despite outshooting the Jamestwon Ironmen on Saturday night, 27-23, another last minute goal beat the Jr. Blues. The Jamestown Ironmen scored a goal with 17 seconds left in the game to beat the Jr. Blues 2-1.

The Ironmen opened up the scoring on the powerplay on a 3 on 2 rush. Ross Pavek would find the back of the net after the Ironmen beat 2 Jr. Blues fore-checkers. 8 minutes later the Jr. Blues would get a power play goal of their own. Mike Fazio won the draw back to Nate Chasteen who moved the puck to Jack Sloan. Sloan fired the puck on net and Tom Cooney was able to get a stick on the puck, deflecting it past the Ironmen goaltender.

The game would remained tied and the game would be pretty even until 17 seconds left in the third. 2 Jr. Blues players went down to block a point shot from Ironmen defensemen Dylan Zink. The puck would eventually hit both Jr. Blues players and end up on the stick of Ironmen forward Luc Gerdes who was standing wide open on the back side of the net. Gerdes would score the eventual game winner as the Jr. Blues fell 2-1.
