Kalamazoo scores six goals in second consecutive win

Kalamazoo, MI- The Kalamazoo Jr. K-Wings scored six goals, including four in the second period, as they skated to a decisive 6-1 win over the Michigan Warriors on Sunday at the Borgess Health Rink inside Wings West.

Early in the first period, Kalamazoo found themselves working with a man-advantage after a Michigan penalty. However it was the Warriors that were able to capitalize on the special teams, asCorey Schueneman scored his second of the season on a shorthanded breakaway.

Just after the ten-minute mark of the first period, Kalamazoo was able to strike for the first time of the day, as it was Jacob McDowell who scored his second of the season, and second in as many days, to tie the game at one apiece.

A few moments later, Kalamazoo took their first lead of the game on the third goal of the season by Kyle Gattelaro. His backhander was initially saved by Michigan goalie, Mike Pesendorfer, but Gattelaro put his own rebound into the back of the net to give his team a one-goal lead after twenty minutes.

Four minutes and twenty-two seconds into the second, Robbie Payne parked himself in front of the goal and deflected a shot bySam Johnson for his seventh goal of the season.

Following that up, five and a half minutes later, Patrick Spellacynetted his first of the season when he pounced on an open puck in front of the goal and placed it past Pesendorfer.

Just past the mid way point of the middle frame, Taylor Burdenfound an open Danny Hamburg who rifled a one-timer over the glove hand of Pesendorfer for his third of the season, giving his team a 5-1 lead.

Capping off the second period scoring attack was Nolan Culver, who received a  great feed from McDowell, and deked to his backhand to tally his second of the season.

A scoreless third period gave Kalamazoo a decisive 6-1 victory over the Warriors, for their second consecutive win against Michigan.

The Jr. K-Wings will hit the ice again on Saturday, October 13th at 2:00 p.m. at the Borgess Health Rink inside Wings West against the Janesville Jets.
