The Nanaimo Clippers celebrated their 40th Anniversary on Friday, the 10th of August at Cottonwood Golf course in Nanaimo, BC.Hockey Hall of Fame's Lanny McDonald was the guest speaker. Kelly Hrudey, a member of the ownership group, was on hand and conversed with the crowd throughout the evening.
Lanny mesmerized the crowd with stories from his playing days. He explained why he prefers to tell "stories" instead of preaching advice; it's a love for the game and the ability to listen to those involved with hockey that's important. He expressed his passion for junior hockey, calling it the "purest" form of hockey. He promised us three stories, he told us more. I have little doubt that the attendees would have listened to a hundred of them, given the chance!
As an owner, Kelly Hrudey maintains close contact with the team. He expressed the importance of hosting the inaugural Crescent Point Energy Western Canada Cup in 2013, how important the community is to this organization and how proud he is to be involved. He spent an enormous amount of time meeting people and posing for an endless stream of photos. An extremely approachable individual, his infectious smile gave Lanny's moustache a run for its money!
The Clippers staff also used the occasion to incorporate a charity event that otherwise would not have taken place this year, with proceeds going to the Erica D'Alessandro Murphy VIU Athletic Bursary Fund. The combination golf tournament and dinner was a huge success with Players, Alumni, Staff, Fans, Billet Families and Friends in attendance.
The Nanaimo Clippers play in the Island division of the BCHL. In the past 8 seasons, the Clippers have 4 first place finishes in the league! For more information on the Nanaimo Clippers visit: http://www.nanaimoclippers.com/
