Daily Dish: No Enforcement, No Problem - Junior Hockey News

I can promise all of you this, the good folks that operate the Eastern Junior Hockey League are not going to be happy with me this week. Instead of trying to shoot the messenger, the league should clean up their act. The problem is that they can't and still attract the players that THINK they are are at the elite level and willing to pay top dollar for the opportunity to convince themselves.

Confession of an EJHL Parent
I got this email from a coach in one of the more established tier III leagues.

So get this... was at a showcase talking to a dad whose kid is young, highly sought after, and apparently has a number of college offers already. Good player for sure. I get to talking to the dad during the showcase and he tells me his son played in the EJ last year and I said good for him. We talk about costs and I ask how much it cost for his son to play there. Didn't cost a dime!! Played for free. The dad's words. His kid is a really good player so I could see how he would have a bunch of teams after him. As for paying to play, just telling you what the Dad told me.   Imagine that... one of many stories, I'm sure.

Again, this is the worst kept secret in junior hockey. Everybody has known about it for years yet the EJHL has been allowed to continue the practice. The point is proven, the standards of operation are worthless if there is nobody to enforce the standards.

Speaking of standards...

Thom Brigl and the Bismarck Bobcats
Every good soap opera needs a villan and Terrible Thom is playing the role nicely. While the Aberdeen Wings have determined that the training fee was outside the operational standards set for the tier II level of play and issued refunds to all the players, Brigl insists that he has done nothing wrong and has tried to convince other owners to do the same thing...with success. I am now being told that the Owatonna Express were doing the same thing.

It is more than obvious that NAHL commissioner Mark Frankenfeld is unable, or unwilling, to enforce the standards so maybe John Vanbiesbrouck should be the guy swinging the paddle.

Everybody Loves Tony?
Not this guy. http://ctvsportsextra.wordpress.com/2011/06/21/more-jeff-kugel/ Jeff Kugel is a former Tony Curtale player that would love to get his old coach into a cage. Why is that not surprising? Kugel also provides readers with further evidence that Curtale's statement to JuniorHockey.com that he has never sent a player out to fight was a huge pile of... yea, you get the point.

Stephen,
Your latest Dish was spot on. Because of the loss of the Tornado youth teams Curtale lost $60k in salaries. He paid Murphy 30k per team to coach plus his Asst Coach Salary.

Don't forget Tony was also getting 30k for coaching the Southlake Dragons high school team. The new owner also put an end to that saying if I'm paying you I want a winner and not a part time coach for a high school team.

When he was given his contract he balked at signing because it was a pay cut. And add this to the money he lost for salaries from the Youth teams and it became obvious that one of his two assistants had to go. Thats why Bloomie took the job at the Florida Eels. And even after that Tony still didn't sign wanting more money than he was paid in the last 2 seasons. And it did all come down to a head and he and Murph will be making less this season. The owner doesn't care as much about the Robertson Cup as he does about having a winning season and putting more butts in the seats.

So Tony had to settle for less money than he has ever made before. The total coaching budget for the team had been reduced. And the loss of the 60k for the youth teams and the 30k for the high school teams will put TCs 1040 in the 'reality zone' with other NAHL coaches.

Did u ever hear how he stole his current wife by promising her her son would play for the Tornado? Only to trade him (Jake Stafford) last year?

All this while her hubby's was flying around the globe trying to keep her lifestyle up to standards.

Also assault charges were dropped.

Where there is this much smoke there is...what? No son of mine will be influenced by a coach that is often under the influence.

Tom Brigl makes other owners in the NAHL look bad with this approach. It is surely suprising that he is allowed to get away with this.Should there not be sanctions of some sort against him?

Stephen,

There are those damned unnamed sources again.

I can tell you that I know for a fact that at least portions of your source's revelations are flat out false, with a capital B.S.

Knowing for a fact that portions of their claims are completely false bring the rest of their claims directly into question.

Again, it is easy to put anything your little heart desires on your site as long as you are citing unnamed sources, regardless of the validity of what you write. Until you begin to name your sources or they grow enough of a sack to attach their name to it then maybe I will give it some credibility.

Would you consider removing the personal comments about the Tornado Coach from your above post. It really detracts from what I consider overall to be a great website.
