Fifty-Five Americans Selected 2012 National Hockey League Entry Draft - Junior Hockey News

14 Players Chosen in First Two Rounds

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Fifty-five American players were selected during the 2012 National Hockey League Entry Draft in Pittsburgh, Pa., this past weekend, including six in the first round and another eight in the second round.

Center Alex Galchenyuk (Milwaukee, Wis.), chosen third overall by the Montreal Canadiens, was the first American taken in the NHL Entry Draft. Jacob Trouba (Rochester, Mich.), who played at USA Hockey's National Team Development Program, was picked ninth overall by the Winnipeg Jets, marking the first time two Americans went among the top 10 picks since 2008 (Zach Bogosian, 3rd, Atlanta Thrashers; Colin Wilson, 7th, Nashville Predators).

Six players with ties to the NTDP, a member of the United States Hockey League, were chosen in the first two rounds of the NHL Entry Draft, including Trouba, Brady Skjei (Lakeville, Minn./28th overall/New York Rangers), Stefan Matteau (Chicago, Ill./29th overall/New Jersey Devils), Nicolas Kerdiles (Irvine, Calif./36th overall/Anaheim Ducks), Patrick Sieloff (Ann Arbor, Mich./42nd overall/Calgary Flames), and Jake McCabe(Eau Claire, Wis./44th overall/Buffalo Sabres).

NOTES: Twenty American players that competed in the USHL in 2011-12 were chosen. The USHL, America's top junior league, had a record six players chosen in the first round and 28 total players selected that competed in the league in 2011-12 ... A total of 68 current and future NCAA hockey players were selected in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, the most since 2007 (74) ... Thirteen players with ties to USA Hockey's National Team Development Program were selected ... Six American players who played NCAA Division I hockey in 2011-12 were drafted ... Two Americans that competed in the North American Hockey League in 2011-12 were selected, while one American that played in the Eastern Junior Hockey League was chosen ...
