12 OHL Players to Play in Canada-Russia Challenge - Junior Hockey News

The roster for Team Canada in the upcoming Canada-Russia Challenge was announced on Friday by Hockey Canada and the Canadian Hockey League. The four-game exhibition series will start on August 9-10 in Yaroslavl, Russia and both teams will head to Halifax, Nova Scotia on August 13-14.
The Canadian roster that includes three goaltenders, 10 defensemen and 15 forwards will represent their country as they go up against the best Russian junior players. This event will take the place of Canada's National Junior Team summer development camp for this season only.
The four-game series will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the historic 1972 Summit Series in which the first four games were held in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg and Vancouver while the remaining four games took place in Moscow, Russia.
Out of the 28 players that are going to Yaroslavl and Halifax, 12 players from the Ontario Hockey League, five from the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and 11 from the Western Hockey League will have their chance to showcase their talents on the international stage.
Here is the roster of 28 that will represent Canada in the Canada-Russia Challenge (OHL Players are in bold):
Goaltenders: Laurent Brossoit (Edmonton Oil Kings, WHL), Maxime Legace (P.E.I Rocket, QMJHL), Malcolm Subban (Belleville Bulls)
Defense: Cody Ceci (Ottawa 67's), Matthew Dumba (Red Deer Rebels, WHL), Dougie Hamilton (Niagara Ice Dogs), Scott Harrington (London Knights), Ryan Murphy (Kitchener Rangers), Ryan Murray (Everett, WHL), Xavier Ouellet (Blainville Boisbriand Armada, QMJHL), Adam Pelech (Erie Otters), Griffin Reinhart (Edmonton, WHL), Morgan Rielly (Moose Jaw Warriors, WHL)
Forwards: Phillip Danault (Victoriaville Tigres, QMJHL), Phillip Di Giuseppe (University of Michigan, CCHA), Jonathan Guberdeau (Saint John Sea Dogs, QMJHL), Charles Hudon (Chicoutimi Sagueneens, QMJHL), Boone Jenner (Oshawa Generals), Brendan Leipsic (Portland Winterhawks, WHL), Lucas Lessio (Oshawa), Sean Monahan (Ottawa), Ty Rattie (Portland, WHL), Kevin Roy (Lincoln, USHL), Mark Scheifele (Barrie Colts), Hunter Shinkaruk (Medicine Hat Tigers, WHL), Ryan Strome (Niagara), Lukas Sutter (Saskatoon Blades, WHL), Thomas Wilson (Plymouth Whalers).
The roster was selected by Hockey Canada head scout, Kevin Pendergrass, Hockey Canada senior director of hockey operations and national teams Scott Salmond and the coaching staff lead by the Kitchener Rangers' head coach Steve Spott. His assistants include Mario Duhamel of the Drummondville Voltigeurs (QMJHL), Ron Nachbaur of the Spokane Chiefs (WHL) and Andre Tourigny of Rouyn-Noranda Huskies (QMJHL).
Over the next few months, Pendergrass will oversee the development of the all the junior players. This includes the upcoming international tournaments, the first few months of the upcoming CHL season and the CHL Subway Series, which will take place November 5-15. During that time, it will be determined who will be invited to the National Junior Team Camp in December. It will then be determinded which 22 players will represent Canada in the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championships which will take place in Ufa, Russia from December 26 thru January 5, 2013.
