Plymouth Whalers Sign Netminders To OHL Contracts - Junior Hockey News
Published: Wednesday, 13 Jun 2012
The Plymouth Whalers secured their depth in goal for the next few years by signing netminders Alex Nedeljkovic and Riley Corbin to OHL Contracts. Both are expected to be at Whalers' training camp, which will be held in late August. Nedeljkovic, from Parma, Ohio, was taken with the 20th pick in the sixth round this past April's OHL Priority Selection. Listed at 5'11", 190 lbs, Nedeljkovic posted a 12-1-4 record with a 1.88 goals against average, a .903 save percentage and three shutouts last season for the Belle Tire U-16's. Nedeljkovic will be reunited with Whalers' goaltending coach Stan Matwijiw, who was his instructor at the Novi, Michigan-based Bandits Goalie School. Nedeljkovic has been described as a technically sound goalie.
Corbin, who is from Thunder Bay, Ontario, was originally drafted by the Sudbury Wolves in the fifth round of the 2011 OHL Priority Selection. He was acquired by the Whalers in a trade for next year's fifth and 11th round picks. Last year with the Thunder Bay Kings midgets, Corbin registered an 8-3-2 reocrd with a 1.72 goals against average, a .924 save percentage and three shutouts. Listed at 5'10", 160 lbs, Corbin has been described as a talented goaltender with great agility.
For the past two seasons, the duo of Scott Wedgewood and Matt Mahalak has protected the cage for the Whalers. With Wedgewood likely headed to the New Jersey Devil farm system this fall and Mahalak having one year left in the junior ranks, the Whalers' focus for the future had to be goaltending. By selecting Nedeljkovic and Corbin, the franchise's future in goal is set.
