HUMBOLDT, SASK. - The Soo Thunderbirds run at the RBC Cup has come to an end.
The Thunderbirds, making their first RBC Cup appearance in team history, dropped a 3-0 decision to the Penticton Vees in the tournament semi-final on Saturday night.
Michael Garteig stopped all 20 shots he faced to pick up the shutout while Wade Murphy's first period goal held up as the winner as the Vees won their third straight game since dropping their opening two games of the tournament.
Logan Johnston and Curtis Loik also scored for the Vees in the win.
Thunderbirds goaltender John Kleinhans stopped 30 shots in the loss.
Saturday's Vees victory avenged an opening day 2-1 loss against the Thunderbirds.
The Vees now move on to the RBC Cup final where they will face the Woodstock Slammers. The Slammers beat the previously-unbeaten Humboldt Broncos 4-3 in overtime in the opening semi-final game on Saturday.
