Day 4 Wrap
Humboldt Broncos (3-0) vs. Soo Thunderbirds (2-1)
Result: 3-0 Humboldt
HUMBOLDT, Sask. - Colin Dzijacky stopped all 19 shots he faced for the shutout in his tournament debut as the Humboldt Broncos clinched a berth in Saturday's semifinals with a 3-0 win over the Soo Thunderbirds on Tuesday afternoon.
The victory means Humboldt will advance past the preliminary round for the fifth time in as many trips to the National Junior A Championship; the Broncos won the national title in 2003 and 2008, and finished as runners-up in 1987 and 2009.
Andrew Johnston, Josh Roach and Robbie Ciolfi scored the goals for Humboldt (3-0), which outshot the Thunderbirds 42-19. The Broncos have won seven of their last eight games at Elgar Petersen Arena, dating back to the SJHL final against Weyburn.
Penticton Vees (1-2) vs. Woodstock Slammers (1-2)
Result: 2-1 Penticton
HUMBOLDT, Sask. - Joey Benik scored the game-winning goal early in the third period as the Penticton Vees earned their first win of the 2012 RBC Cup with a 2-1 victory over the Woodstock Slammers on Tuesday night.
The win stopped Penticton's first two-game losing streak of the year and kept the Vees from becoming the first Pacific Region team to start the National Junior A Championship 0-3 since the Vernon Vipers in 1999 (although the Vipers ended up winning the national title).
RBC Pick Record: 3-4
Day 5 Pick
Portage Terriers (1-2) vs. Penticton Vees (1-2)
Four of the five Royal Bank Cup participants are going into the final game of pool play with the same 1-2 record. One team is going to miss the semi-finals and it is not going to be the Penticton Vees after they take care of the Terriers today.
