The opening day of the Royal Bank Cup has the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League's Soo Thunderbirds facing the top-seeded Penticton Vees from British Columbia Saturday afternoon before the hometown Humboldt Broncos face the Maritimes' Woodstock Slammers in the evening. So let's get to the good stuff.
Soo Thunderbirds vs. Penticton Vees
On paper, the BCHL champions should be able to handle the Thunderbirds without a problem. There is a funny thing when that paper turns to ice and the boys have to play the game. Yes the Vees are loaded but for every NCAA Division I prospect the Vees have, the Thunderbirds can counter with experience and skill. It is a long tournament and I am going to go out on a limb and stick with the Soo to upset the mighty Vees.
Humboldt Broncos vs. Woodstock Slammers
There is just something about home-cooking, rabid fans, and sleeping in your own bed. Woodstock is going to make it a game but the Broncos will come out on top.
What do you think?
