International Series: Top Division Groups Finalized - Junior Hockey News

Ufa, Russia - After much deliberation, the IIHF has announced the breakdown and schedule for the 2013 World U20 Junior Ice Hockey Championships. While the Groups in Divisions I and II (there are no groups in Division III) are all structured based off of promotions and relegations from the year before, that's not how it works amongst those in the highest tier. According to the IIHF official website it has to do with the overall final ranking in the Top Division (both groups combined). Because of that, relegations and promotions don't exactly work the same at this level and the groups are now different.

Gold Medalist Sweden will be the lone podium team in Group A along with Finland (4th in 2012), the Czech Republic (5th in 2012), Switzerland (8th in 2012), and Latvia (9th in 2012). This could pretty much doom Latvia unless they can somehow find a way to be this year's Cinderella team.

Group B is a bit more parity-friendly with Silver and Bronze Medalists Russia and Canada taking the first two spots. Joining them will be Slovakia (6th in 2012), the United States (7th in 2012), and Germany who was promoted from Division I Group A. Denmark has been relegated to DIA after finishing 10th.

That's all for now, but if you would like information on the scheduling you can find it at http://www.iihf.com/channels1213/wm20/schedule.html.
