Urbandale (IA) The Baha Men's one-hit wonder "Who Let the Dogs Out" continues to serve a purpose because of events such as the 2012 Doxie Dash held during the Des Moines Buccaneers' game on Saturday February 25th. Though, the Baha Men's lasting power proved minimal the Doxie Dash is likely to become a regular part of the Buccaneer' promotional schedule after its successful debut before a season-high Buccaneer Arena crowd of 3,719.
Held as a fundraiser for the Animal Rescue League of Central Iowa, 44 dachshund dogs were registered raising $440. In addition, Lora Rogers, Special Events Coordinator for the ARL, reports an extra $500 in cash and "An entire SUV worth" of pet items were donated by fans to ARL volunteers on site at the game.
"We couldn't have been any happier with the whole event from beginning to end and the ARL deserves the credit" said Buccaneers' VP of Sales and Communications Scott Montesano. "They did all the work getting people to sign-up and we could've easily had over 50 dogs if we didn't cap the number to prevent it from getting too crowded."
Montesano noted how some minor league teams have held this event with only a handful of dogs, proving the ARL of Central Iowa did a fantastic job of getting such an extensive line-up.
"I think this was a huge success" added Rogers.
The dachshunds raced in two heats of 22 dogs each with the top six competing in a final race, each time with the dogs running from goal line to goal line. Longtime Des Moines radio personality, and a friend to the ARL, Lou Sipolt served as the emcee of the event.
"Reports of doggie 'accidents' on the ice were minimal" Montesano joked.
The Des Moines Buccaneers are playing their 32nd consecutive season in the United States Hockey League.
