Dan Carlson scored the only goal in a six-round shootout as the Sioux Falls Stampede slipped by the Waterloo Black Hawks 3-2 at Sioux Falls Arena Saturday.
Carlson's shot beat goalie Jay Williams high to the glove side after Williams and his counterpart Stephon Williams had turned away everything through five-and-a-half rounds. Jay Williams fought off 41 shots during regulation and overtime, while Stephon Williams stopped 37 chances.
Jamie Hill recorded the first goal in regulation on a setup from Tony Cameranesi, who had swiped a puck in the offensive zone at 14:49 of the first period. Sioux Falls evened the game 4:25 into the second with Todd Skirving's shot to the top corner. Cameranesi nudged the Hawks back ahead at 10:49 with a sharp-angled chance off of a Stampede player. The lead lasted until 9:45 of the third; a power play faceoff win created an opportunity for Matt Van Voorhis to fire a low shot through traffic and past Williams, who was screened by his own man.
With the overtime point, Waterloo has still earned five of six possible points, all on the road, to start the season. The Hawks conclude their season-opening travel Friday against the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Waterloo's first home game is against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on October 15th. Individual game tickets go on sale Monday at 11:30AM.
