The story in Jamestown, with the arrival of the Ironmen, keeps getting more surreal. In an apparent need for an abundance of space, within the walls of the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena, they have requested the use of an additional storage room. Arena management quickly granted the request. There was only one problem... That storage room is already being used, and has been by the same group, since shortly after the arena first opened its doors.
That user group is the Jamestown Lakers Sled Hockey team. They provide a chance to get on the ice for mentally and physically handicap kids and young adults. Through the work of volunteers and parents of the team members work throughout the year raise money to make this program free for the players to play.
Arena management has given the Sled Hockey team another location located down the back arena corridor. One of the problems that remain is, that to use the new space, the Sled Hockey team will have to make modifications to the cart they use to transport the sleds from their storage room to the ice. A cost that will have to be picked up by the team's own funds with no financial help to date from the Ironmen or arena. As of right now the storage cage that they are moving the sled hockey team to doesn't even have a door to lock up their equipment. The Sled Hockey team was told that the arena is going to try to figure out something to finish inclosing this storage cage.
In the midst of all of this, the Jamestown Lakers Sled Hockey team is underway with a fundraising drive. Any donations would be kindly accepted by the team to help pay for ice time, equipment, tournament fees, sleds, and sled hockey sticks. Mail to: Jamestown Lakers Sled Hockey; 319 West 3rd Street; Jamestown, NY 14701.
