Live from Madison Square Gardens in New York City, ESPN brings you're the 2015 US Open Cup of Hockey. This 3rd round match features the host New York Rangers of the National Hockey League against the North American Hockey League's Wenatchee Wild.
Wenatchee got here by beating both the Central Hockey League's Arizona Sundogs and the ECHL's Idaho Steelheads and did so with outstanding goaltending. This is a single elimination tournament, so anything can happen.
Imagine the uproar if something this event ever took place in hockey. Heck, it would be great for just the juniors to do something along these lines.
One week from today, on June 14th in Charleston, South Carolina, my group of amateur players from the northside of Houston will face the USL-Pro Battery in the 1st Round of the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup. If we somehow get past Charleston, and whoever in the 2nd Round, we will face Major League Soccer's FC Dallas in the 3rd Round.
We started Regals FC a little more than sixteen months ago with a small group of college kids mixed in with some of the local talent. The entire concept blew up into where we are today, one of the best amateur soccer teams in the United States.
The club has been chasing this dream from our inception. The idea of the club was inspired by Roma Dallas, a team that made a magical run to the 4th Round of the cup a few years ago, beating MLS side Chivas USA along the way before falling to the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Next week will tell us all what kind of team we really have, it remains to be seen if we are just a barker or actually a team with a lot of bite.
What do you think?
