Mike Butters knows how to scout talent. He does it for the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning and he has done it for his own Helena Bighorns. Now Butters has something else he can hang his hat on; the 2011 USA Hockey Tier III Junior "A" National Championship.
It was not suppose to be this easy.
The Bighorns dominated the El Paso Rhinos 5-1 giving Helena their first national championship in the club's ten-year history.
Former Fresno Monster Ryan Parkhouse scored twice in the first eleven minutes, Michael Sullivan also notched a pair while the Bighorns out shot the Rhinos 42-22.
Helena won 65 of the 68 games the team played this season and skated into the match up full of confidence. El Paso, on the other hand, simply ran out of steam. Their physical game and Monday night performance against Idaho got the best of them on Tuesday against Helena.
Congratulations to the Helena Bighorns for capping an amazing season with a National Championship.
