A thrilling Thanksgiving game send 3,500 Waterloo Black Hawks fans home happy from Young Arena Thursday after a 3-2 overtime win against the archrival Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
Ryan Papa, making just his sixth appearance as a Black Hawk, buried his own rebound at 1:55 of overtime, setting off a bench-clearing celebration. The score delivered a victory after Waterloo had led briefly in the second. Trailing 1-0, Jamie Hill tallied a breakaway goal 2:55 after intermission. Five minutes, forty-eight seconds later, Gunner Hughes swept in a go-ahead score from the top of the crease. The RoughRiders tied the game on a power play rebound goal from Sam Warning at 13:11. The first marker of the evening came on an odd-man rush, with Jayson Megna flipping in a shot at 10:58 of the first.
The Hawks outshot the RoughRiders 40-26. C.J. Motte made 24 saves, while Brady Hjelle turned away 37 chances.
The teams get together again Friday for an immediate rematch in Cedar Rapids at 7:05.
