A five goal first period vaulted the Spokane Chiefs to a 9-3 win over the Portland Winterhawks on Wednesday night in the Spokane Arena. It was Spokane's third win in a row as they moved to 4-0 on Wednesday nights at home. In those four victories, the Chiefs have averaged 8.5 goals per game.
Brenden Kichton's two goals led eight different scorers and Blake Gal had three assists in the Chiefs third straight win over Portland. Spokane is now tied with Tri-City for second place in the U.S. Division with 34 points.
Collin Valcourt, Mitch Holmberg, Tyler Johnson, Kenton Miller and Steven Kuhn had Spokane's first period goals as the Chiefs led 5-0 through 20-minutes. Kichton and Levko Koper scored in the second. Portland also scored twice in the second and 1:04 into the third.
Kichton and Tyler Vanscourt had the Chiefs goals in the third for the 9-3 final.
Spokane was 4-7 on the power play and outshot the Winterhawks 31-29.
The Chiefs will travel to Vancouver on Friday night before they host the Kamloops Blazers on Saturday.
