Two hockey teams got together in the Dallas area for a friendly scrimmage yesterday. No big deal right? One would think that the Queen of England was doing the nasty with Colonial Gadaffi by the reaction of local USA Hockey authorities ... Read More...
It is guys like this who ruin sports. One man sitting on his high horse trying to make a point. In this case a point that really has no bearing. If you are correct Stephen in you assumptions you stated above this guy should resign.
To the referees, Thank you for putting Hockey First instead of politics. If I was a referee in Dallas I would pay my $100 per year to have a huge Umbrella insurance to cover anything that happens to me on the ice. I would work every game I could for whatever league. The economy is in a spiral downward and everyone needs to put food on their tables at home.
So to you Mr.Ralph Hunter/President get over your title and get off your high horse. This is not a situation you can take your ball and go home. You have no right asking individuals what their intentions are, its frankly none of your business.
The Threats have to go. They are childish and totaly uncalled for. It's about the Players not the Officials. The Officials are there to guide the players and help them play this game the right way. It shouldn't matter what Organization the teams belong, they all deserve good Officials. The Officials have to RIGHT to work without being threatened. If I were Mr. Hunter, I would be very careful moving forward with those threats of non-work.
I'm just sayin'
We have been with AAU for several seasons snd I don't think we would ever go back to USAH.
Our main issue with AAU is the promises the keep making, to go to USOC and/or USAH to get us permission to play in tournaments with Non-AAU teams. Nothing seems to be happening.
This would only help, to expand Ice Hockey in AAU.
It's common for officials association's to restrict their ref's to USA Hockey/NCAA games. We've had a few start up leagues and men's leagues that have not been USAH in our area, and ref's have been sent notices regarding this (we are even talking at the youth level - they would be not allowed to work a Mite playoff game if they ref any non-sanctioned games)
I feel it isnt right, just like most. The official's are independent contractors, and they know/understand they dont have USA Hockey coverage during those games, but USA Hockey wants to eliminate these non-sanctioned games/leagues, and this is one way they try to do that.
Same way Apple doesn't let its contractors work for Microsoft. I'd don't get the outrage. This is business, just what everybody's been yelling for. Let junior teams run their own businesses, is the chant. Now. it's happening. Business means competition, business means contracts, business means toe the company line.
And for all of you who think I have no empathy for independent contractors-- I worked as a musician for ten years and several years as an independent contractor in cabletv.
As a musician, if I had a contract to work Friday-Saturday at a club and tried to work Wednesday at a competitors I would have been fired.
In cabletv, if I worked for company Xcast, for example, I could not work for another cable firm for a year after I left or my contract expired because of the training and work knowledge I had acquired. Unfair, maybe, but business as usual, yes.
If we want a sport that only operates as a business so they can for example, be "the only sanctioned Junior A league in the country" then we will have business rules not sporting rules control the movements of players and officials.
Apple and Microsoft do not hire indi contractors unless they sign prior to hiring a letter of confidentiality. No such non compete or confidential agreement exists for USAH. What is being attempted here is a violation of the Uniform Comercial Code, and a tortuous interference with a persons ability to earn an income. These actions are completely illegal, even to attempt them is illegal. Does anyone think for a second that OHL referees are not allowed to work NHL games? Pro hockey is not under USAH, and many USAH referees work pro games. The selective implementation of this is very disturbing. People need to grow up and realize there is competition in town, change to better serve your customers, or the people down the street will eventually get your business.
Well Harry, if the majority of the games these guys officiated are now off limits to them, does that mean they should sit home and await a call to do the preferred games or better yet Pee Wee and the rest of youth hockey for USAH? It really pisses me off to hear all these reason or opinions on what these refs should be or not be doing from people who will lose no income. It's easy making the call from the cheap seats, eh Harry?
